Melinda has been working in primary schools for 25 years and is passionate about looking at the uniqueness of each child to help them reach their full potential both emotionally and academically. She strongly believes a child’s ability to flourish in life is not determined by their academic achievements but how they feel about and value themselves. Therefore, her focus is on building a child’s self-esteem and helping them to become emotionally literate.
Melinda is very interested in wellbeing and understanding mental health issues as she feels this is key to helping in her work with children. She uses much of her free time taking courses to understand and improve her knowledge of this key element in life for all. More recently she has begun training as a children’s counsellor with Place2be and will be undertaking a voluntary placement in a school.
Melinda is also qualified as the following:
• Creative Youth Wellbeing and Mindfulness Coach – Melinda is able to deliver a targeted programme for groups of children, that helps to improve confidence and self-esteem, reduce anxiety and low mood and explore creative ways to regulate their emotions.
• Pawsb Facilitator through the Mindfulness in Schools project. This enables Melinda to deliver a mindfulness programme to whole classes or groups of children in primary schools.
• Draw and Talk Practitioner – Melinda completed both the Foundation and Advanced course over 14 years ago and has great experience in this intervention. Draw and Talk allows children to explore underlying thoughts that may be affecting behaviour, learning, self-esteem and relationships.
Melinda is also experienced in Sensory Circuits. This is a sensory motor skills programme aimed at helping those children who find it difficult to concentrate and be alert in class. In addition, she can help children with fine motor skills and working memory interventions. Melinda has delivered phonics and spelling strategy lessons both as an intervention and to whole classes and enjoys seeing the confidence grow in children as it helps them to become more confident in both their reading and spelling.
In her personal life, Melinda enjoys nothing more than spending time with her four children. She is also very keen on looking after her own physical and mental health and wellbeing and enjoys yoga, Pilates, walking, mindfulness, socialising, baking and reading. We are very pleased to have Melinda as part of our team.
